Your projects should start slow in order to run fast later

I am a big believer of short and fat projects and I am very vocal about it. Because of this I often get asked if I propose to fast track projects and reduce upfront work.

No, I am not. On the contrary, I think more time should be spent on upfront work.

Yes, to keep costs down and maximize benefits you should keep implementation phases short and delays small. This should not be seen as an excuse for fast-tracking projects; that is, rushing them through decision making for an early start.

For smaller projects, this might be something you can get away with, but for large technology projects all you do if you hit the ground running is fail hard. Front-end planning and validation need to be thorough before deciding to give the green light to a project, or to stop it.

You need to go slow at first (during project initiation) in order to run fast later (during project delivery).

Unfortunately, many times the situation is exactly the opposite. Front-end planning and validation is rushed, bad projects are not stopped, important projects do not get the money/ people/management attention they need, implementation phases and delays are long, costs explode, and value diminishes.

In a nutshell: Stop the madness. Start slow, and run fast later.

Projects Fail at the Beginning. And This is Why.

23. Februar 2020

Beginnings are always difficult. Projects are about people, people are about relationships, relationships are about trust, trust comes over time. So at the very moment your project is at its most vulnerable because you don’t have enough information, credible plans, nor stakeholder support, you also don’t have the relationships with key people to fall back

Project Success is a Self-Fulfilling Prophecy

16. Februar 2020

Project success is a self-fulfilling prophecy. Go around admitting doubt, and your project will fail. Tell everyone that it will succeed and they will believe it too, and you have every chance of getting there. You’re thinking it cannot be that simple? That it just sounds like self-help psycho-babble? All I can say is that

Project ≠ Product ≠ Business ≠ Company

9. Februar 2020

Last few weeks I had a number of heated discussions around these terms. People get confused and make wrong decisions because of this. This is my take on it. A project is a temporary endeavor undertaken to create a unique product, service or result. It is temporary in that it has a defined beginning and

Leadership Is Not for Cowards

3. Februar 2020

Fewer “bad leader” types have the capacity to paralyze a team more than a coward – the leader who praises poor performance, avoids difficult issues, and buys loyalty by saying yes to anyone and any idea. The dictionary defines the word coward, when used as a noun, as “a person who lacks courage in facing

Over the years I’ve noticed a key distinction for project managers that deliver results and the ones that don’t. Project Manager Type A is a person who is very smart, knows the process, knows the business, knows the client, knows the technology, etc. They do an excellent job of reporting on how things are going,

If You Want to Bring Change in Your Organization …

20. Januar 2020

People don’t change. Unless they want to. Humans are unique in their ability to willingly change. We can change our attitude, our appearance, and our skillset. But only when we want to. The hard part, then, isn’t the changing. It’s the wanting. So if you want to bring change in your organization you should make

Tell the Story of Your Project

Persuasion is essential for a business and the projects that originate from this business. Customers must be convinced to buy your company’s products or services, employees and colleagues to go along with a new strategic plan or reorganization, investors to buy (or not to sell) your stock, and partners to sign the next deal. But

How to Deal With Stakeholders Resistance to Change

3. Januar 2020

There is a simple truth about projects. All projects result in change. Some projects bring about small modifications to the status quo, and others introduce a large-scale transformation. No matter the size or scale of the project, people resist change. Overcoming this resistance to change is a top challenge faced by organizations and project sponsors

The Project Recovery Model ™

1. Dezember 2019

Recovery of troubled projects is a combination of art, science, and craft. Many have tried to translate project recovery in a “fits all” framework, methodology or process. After more than a decade of doing project recoveries, I’m of the opinion that this is a futile exercise. The reality is just different. What has really helped
